STAFF, FOREIGN PARTNERS AND ADVISORS
- After nearly five years with Sabre, Project Director Suzanne Deehy
left for Rwanda in October to work on the logistics of development
projects with the International Action Against Hunger. Her
organizational skills were especially valuable during the rapid growth
and geographical expansion of the book donation program, and her
idealism and dedication were an inspiration for her Sabre colleagues
and partners in the field.
- Rebecca Schneider joined Sabre as Reference Librarian in the autumn
of 1994. She is involved with the Internet-based Technical Assistance
Project and is developing a "Virtual Reference Center" for use by
clients in Eastern Europe and the FSU. Schneider is a graduate of the
University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Library and Information
Studies, where she acquired extensive experience in on-line searching,
Internet tools and training in special libraries.
- Sabre welcomed three new members to the Scientific Assistance
Project Steering Committee during 1994: Leonard J. Baldyga, former
director of the Office of European Affairs at the U.S. Information
Agency; Mark T. Munger, a management consultant in Boston, who has
provided useful advice for the Foundation's strategic planning; and
James F. Munsell, a partner of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton,
which provides Sabre with pro bono legal services through its New York
and Brussels offices.
- David Dunn, president and CEO of Dunn & Company, earned
recognition from the U.S. Small Bus- iness Administration as
Massachusetts Small Business Person of the Year for his innovative work
in provid- ing out-of-the-ordinary bookbinding services for printers
and publishers. Sabre's book warehousing operations have been housed
in Dunn's Clinton, Massachusetts, facility since 1991, and Dave and his
staff have given countless hours to helping Sabre with its storage and
shipping needs. The gala Millionth Book luncheon was held in the Dunn
warehouse in 1992.
