The American Sociological Association (ASA) assists universities, libraries and other institutions abroad through two book and journal programs.
The ASA facilitates the donation of scholarly materials relevant to sociology, to universities, libraries and other institutions particularly in Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe by distributing to members upon request a resource list of organizations and their guidelines that will assist donors with shipping and placement. Donors contact the intermediary organizations directly; transactions occur between donors, assisting organizations and recipients without further assistance from the ASA. Donors usually cover the cost of shipping materials within the US to assisting organizations which in turn usually pay to ship the materials overseas.
The updated information packet is available from the ASA's Coordinator of International Affairs. It includes brief descriptions of acceptable donations and profiles of intermediary organizations.
The ASA maintains a soft currency fund with which it provides a limited number of complimentary journal subscriptions to overseas educational and research institutions. Through this program ASA currently donates subscriptions to eight of its journals to over thirty institutions in the above-mentioned regions. Titles include: The American Sociological Review, Contemporary Sociology, Sociology of Education, Footnotes and the Journal of Health and Social Behavior.
Materials offered: current journal subscriptions.
