General Description:

Books for Asia is a project of The Asia Foundation. The Asia Foundation is a private, nonprofit, nongovernmental organization established in California in 1954 that is working to build leadership, improve policies, and strengthen institutions to foster greater openness and shared prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region.

Project Description:

The Asia Foundation has made many contributions to library development and this has been achieved in particular through its Books for Asia program under which more than 35 million books have been distributed to more than 50,000 schools, universities and libraries throughout Asia and the Pacific. Books are contributed from publishers (over 500,000 new or remaindered books each year) and educational institutions, libraries and individuals (mainly used books).

The principal subject areas are law, international relations, political science English language, economics, science/technology, environmental studies and women's studies. Requests are made through eight of the Foundation's twelve field offices in Asia. Appropriate books are chosen from those received in the Foundation's warehouse in San Francisco.
