The Darien Book Aid Plan, Inc. is a non-profit volunteer organization founded in 1949 to build a foundation of international peace, understanding, and friendship by the free distribution of books. Letters requesting free books must be written on of official stationery or carry the stamp of the organization. The following information must be included: printed name and mailing address, age level of group, level of proficiency in English, subjects desired, and any other information which would assist the Plan in accurately filling the request.
Destinations of Shipments: Reading material is mailed to more than 150 countries around the world to those who ask for it. Request letters are received from libraries, schools, universities, teachers, Peace Corps Volunteers, etc.
Kinds of Books Distributed: Textbooks: (English Grammar, Biology, Chemistry, Physics). Fiction: (Classics & Contemporary - children's books, novels written in the Spanish Language, books of high interest, low vocabulary level for those studying English as a Second Language (ESL), Kindergarten books). Non-Fiction: (Accounting, Art, Agriculture, Automotive Repair, Engineering, How-to & Crafts; Dictionaries, Thesaurus, Encyclopedias).
Content Selection Policy: Do not accept all books; selection criteria as follows: Textbooks: last ten years, both hard and soft cover. Non-Fiction: All subjects, hard and soft cover, with current cotents. Fiction: All paperbacks, hard-cover classic and contemporary.
No. of Copies Distributed: Each year, Book Aid ships over 5 tons of free, good reading material. Since 1949, Book Aid has shipped over 3 million books to more than 180 countries.
New Books: Donated by publishers, individuals, libraries, book stores, and others.
Used Books: Same sources as above except publishers.
