Seeks to meet the needs of the poor through social and economic development programs aimed at strengthening institutions, training community workers, and providing technical assistance. Working in partnership with local nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), WEI designs national literacy and non-formal education campaigns, providing the literacy materials and the teaching methods. Training and organizational development programs instruct trainers in both public and private agencies to use learner-centered teaching methods in the areas of health, natural resource management, and employment. Small enterprise and partnership projects provide training and institutional support to NGOs working with women in small business and income generation. Assistance is provided to countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and the United States.
