TsDAVO was founded in 1943 and until 1980 was officially named the Central State Archive of the October Revolution and Socialist Development of the Ukrainian SSR (TsDAZhR URSR). Headquartered in Kharkiv from 1945 until 1972, TsDAZhR consolidated the postrevoltutionary holdings from three earlier central state archives in Kharkiv: the Central Archive of the Revolution (TsAR-Tsentral'nyi arkhiv revoliutsiï), the Central State Historical Archive in Kharkiv (Tsentral'nyi derzhavnyi istorychnyi arkhiv v Kharkovi), and the Central Archive of Labor (Tsentral'nyi arkhiv pratsi). TsDAVO now serves as a consolidated repository for all records of national-level state institutions, organizations, and other agencies dating from the February Revolution of 1917 to the present, predominantly from the period of Soviet rule in Ukraine.

There is also considerable documentation of émigré origin, including most of the documentation collected in the Ukrainian Historical Office in Prague (Czech. Ukrajinsky historicny kabinet; Ukr. Ukrains'kyi istorychnyi kabinet) during the 1920s and 1930s, along with other émigré collections from Czechoslovakia and other European countries that were transferred to Kyiv in 1945. These formerly secret holdings are particularly rich in personal papers and related materials of the Ukrainian emigration.

Access: Most fonds in the archive are now open to researchers. Access is still limited to documents in some top-secret files. Access may also be limited to some fonds from the 1917-1921 period and the Ukrainian emigration, which have recently been declassified but not fully processed for research. Researchers should present an official letter from their sponsoring institution in Ukraine.

General Guides: See PKG Archives: Ukraine (1988), pp. 233-60.
