Consumer Market The overall volume of sales of consumer goods sold through all the channels of distribution in the first quarter 1998 decreased by 2.4% (in relative prices) compared to the first quarter 1997. Retail turnover (public catering inclusive) of officially registered enterprises of all the forms of ownership and business activity was down 2.4% and totaled UAH 4,073.1 mln.. Sales of agricultural products through municipal marketplaces were down 3% so too was the volume of paid services provided to the public (this volume amounted to UAH 2,1 bln).
Capital Investment and Construction Capital investment made by enterprises of all the forms of ownership in the first quarter 1998 totaled UAH 1,752.6 mln, that is, an increase compared to the respective period of the previous year by 4.8% (in 1997, this index dropped by 17%).
During the first quarter 1998, construction and assembling facilities implemented contracted works worth UAH 998 mln. This is up 1.9% compared to the last-year's level. Output per worker engaged in construction and assembling works increased by 16.2% compared to the first quarter of 1997.
Thus, one may state that for the first time during many years some signs of recovery of investment activity have appeared in Ukraine.
